Originally built in 1941 and expanded over the next four decades as the Alcan Research Building, this project revitalized the historic facility to meet modern Code standards and support multi-use tenancy.
A new floor opening now connects the basement and ground levels, creating an innovative training centre with access to an outdoor sunken terrace. Natural light is introduced through six 21’-0” x 21’'-0” Kalwall skylights, bringing diffused illumination into the building’s core with minimal solar gain.
The addition of a three-storey Kalwall-clad entrance pavilion, known locally as “the Cube,” enhanced the building’s presence along Princess Street, while major re-grading improved accessibility. The exterior is redefined with insulated metal panel cladding, and the building systems were fully modernized with new mechanical, electrical, and emergency power services.
